hand arthritis?

A great article I found in my Mayo Clinic newsletter.
Arthritis can be tough, especially if you have it in your hand/fingers. This is a great slide presentation with ideas to help people with hand arthritis do every day chores like brushing your teeth, buttoning a jacket, holding your keys. You may not need this today, but I'm sure you know someone that could benefit from these helpful tools - and, you never know, they may be useful for you one day too!

It's a great article about the worst french fries you can eat and gives you some insight about why, then gives you a great alternative.

7 things that overweight people do - and you should avoid!

Another great article from Yahoo Health.

7 Reasons You're Still Overweight

The title is a little deceiving - basically, it's an article about what overweight people do when it comes to eating a meal. If you watch people around you next time you eat out, I'll bet you spot each one of these things!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Happy Valentine's Day to all!
Okay, so you've heard that chocolate is good for you. But is it for real??? Got this from my Mayo Clinic newsletter:

Can chocolate be good for my health?

Healthy chocolate sounds like a dream come true, but chocolate hasn't gained the status of health food quite yet. Still, chocolate's reputation is on the rise, as a growing number of studies suggest that it can be a heart-healthy choice.
Chocolate and its main ingredient, cocoa, appear to reduce risk factors for heart disease. Flavanols in cocoa beans have antioxidant effects that reduce cell damage implicated in heart disease. Flavanols also help lower blood pressure and improve vascular function. Dark chocolate contains more flavanols than does milk chocolate. One caveat: The evidence for the healthy benefits of flavanol-rich chocolate comes mostly from short-term and uncontrolled studies. More research will be needed to confirm chocolate's role in heart health.
In the meantime, if you want to add chocolate to your diet, do so in moderation. Why? Most commercial chocolate has ingredients that add fat, sugar and calories. And too much can contribute to weight gain, a risk factor for high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes.
Choose dark chocolate with cocoa content of 65 percent or higher. Limit yourself to no more than 3 ounces (85 grams) a day, which is the amount shown in studies to be helpful. Because this amount may provide up to 450 calories, you may want to cut calories in other areas or step up the exercise to compensate.

Thinking outside of the heart-shaped box!

Okay, so you're watching what you eat and doing a fairly good job of keeping up with your New Year's resolution. Then comes Valentine's Day and your first opportunity to be tempted with sweets. Here's a great article that I found on Yahoo Health to help you think outside of the heart-shaped box!

Non-traditional gifts with a traditional flare.

There are some great low calorie sweet treat options as well as some other great ideas!
Or you can be like Scott and I . . . My thought about Valentine's Day is that this is the one day a year he's allowed to diss me. I expect him to love me and treat me well the OTHER 364 days a year! It's okay to take one off!

10 Worst Sandwiches

Remember, even sandwiches can be loaded with calories. Here's a great article that I got on Yahoo Health, I always seem to enjoy his 'worst' and 'avoid these foods' lists.
Worst Sandwiches
He lists the worst sandwiches and then gives you an alternative. Remember, it's not always necessary to get the bigger size just because it's a bargain! Save them money and get the smaller size. A couple of other thoughts - opt out of mayo or dressing or spread, opt out of cheese and you'll save loads of calories there too!

pregnant or post-pregnant?

A great Q & A from my friends at MyApex.com to help pregnant or post-pregnant women with weight management - it's also a great question regarding short-term discrepancy issues!
Question:
Does post pregnancy weight loss differ from regular weight loss? I started the bodybugg 2 weeks after having my baby and in 4 weeks have not been able to lose 2 pounds per week. I'm not nursing and have been exercising 6 days a week.
