Chickepox Vaccine - good information from the CDC

Because I like to help keep you in-the-know, here’s a great article from the CDC about the Chickenpox vaccine. Click here.

“Chickenpox is a very contagious disease. The best way to prevent the disease is by getting the Chickenpox vaccine.”

It's possible to drop the weight without a gym.... really

Hopefully all of my Blog fans have realized that Weight Management is all about monitoring your incoming calories (food) vs outgoing calories (physical activity). You aren’t interested in going to a gym, that's fine – instead, you have chosen to decrease your incoming calories. That works, too.

Here are some 'little things' that may help to add up to some extra calorie burn during your day:

· Stand more often - I burn nearly twice the calories standing vs seated.

· When you brush your teeth, lift your legs and march high in place.

· When you answer the phone, stand up.

· Stand/walk in place while you watch TV.

· Take the steps instead of the elevator.

· Take the long way to the bathroom - if you work on the 3rd floor in your office building walk down a flight or up a flight of stairs and use the restroom on another floor.

· Take the dog for a walk instead of letting him out into the backyard, even if it’s only a 15 minute walk (he appreciates is and so will you). No dog? Play with the cat every day for 15 minutes by standing with a string or flashlight.

· Instead of leaving a stack of stuff at the bottom of the steps to take upstairs, make the trip up the steps each time.

· Sweep/vacuum every day.

· Wash the car yourself, instead of running it through the car wash.

Just a few things to get you started on lightly increasing your activity level!

Nutrition Facts labels - a 'how to' to reading them

The key to choosing healthful foods: Using the nutrition facts on the food label.

A great web page I found on ChooseMyPlate.gov. It breaks down the different areas of the food label and helps us make a little better sense of it.

Small ways to cut calories, without giving up much

Small ways to cut calories:

· Switch your milk to Skim/Fat Free, or progressively switch by using 2% first.

· Switch to light beer / diet soda (you’ll get used to the taste, I promise).

· Drink more water – if you aren’t ready to switch from regular to diet soda, then increase your water intake instead.

· Switch to a lower calorie salad dressing or try just Balsamic Vinegar instead of an oil & vinegar dressing.

· Start measuring your cereal in the morning – to start the process, fill your bowl as usual and THEN pour it into a measuring cup to see how much you generally eat. The next morning, try to cut back the serving size.

· Use a smaller plate – use a salad plate instead of a dinner plate.

· Switch to a 40 calorie per slice bread.

· Read your labels, ‘low fat’ isn’t always the best choice. You may find that the per serving calories are nearly the same on the low fat version, quite often they increase the sodium to help lower the fat.

Most importantly, start reading labels – Sometimes you like two different products equally, but you’ll find one of the two has less calories. Reading labels will make you more aware, and a better advised consumer.
