Smart Fitness for Grown-ups

U.S. News has been running a great series that started April 10 with Smart Fitness for Grown-Ups: A 10-Week Workout Routine. The goal is to help you adopt and integrate workout habits for life. This article lists four tips that we should all keep in mind for fitness:
  1. Make sure you're healthy enough for exercise.
  2. Make exercising non-negotiable.
  3. Set yourself up for success.
  4. Set a goal for yourself.
When I started to reshape my thinking about fitness, these were all things I kept in mind and it's great to see someone put them in writing. Number 3 may be the most important; I updated my goals as I went along, and tried to always keep them attainable. Nothing worse than saying "I want a 25 inch waist by summer" when it's April and your waist is currently 32 inches. Instead, I set smaller goals in do-able chunks. I'm a big fan of attainability, particularly when it came to working out, losing weight and generally being more fit. The steps I set for myself made it possible for me to achieve success over and over. Each time I reached a goal, I could look back on where I'd been and where I was currently with pride, then look forward to a new, attainable goal. Now, my success is remaining strong and fit, and it's the best goal to strive for yet! (And possibly the most difficult goal, believe it or not!) One of my favourite reads in this series has been yesterday's article 10-Week Workout: 6 Ways to Get Motivated. Keep in mind that you want to set yourself up for success, and motivation becomes key. It seems to be a balance of the two - setting attainable goals to continue to achieve success, yet keeping the goals high enough to continue to be motivated. Motivation is often the most difficult part of fitness. I know sometimes I'd rather just veg out on the couch than get my body moving, and this article has some great tips to keep me going. I hope some of the U.S. News tips help you to attain your own level of success! Donna Fit for Life Guest Blogger Successful client of Sharron & Scott
