Happy Birthday Mom!

Totally unrelated to fitness or weight loss – Happy Birthday to my Mom!  She’s still only 29, FYI…. How she has a 43 year old daughter at the age of 29, I’ll never know.  I guess that’s why she’s the Mom and I’m the adorable daughter!!!

Eating Light for Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving time again…. Unless you’re spending it home alone, then that generally means lots of food – and much of it is high calorie and high fat.  Then add Eggnog and your favorite alcohol beverage(s) and you have a recipe for diet disaster.

Remember that PORTION CONTROL is the key to weight management.  It’s the Quality of the food that you desire, not the Quantity.  Check out the ‘Portion Distortion’ page on one of my favorite websites to help you serve yourself tomorrow…

Remember that 3 ounces of meat does not mean 3 ounces of EACH meat that is available.  You want to try your two or three favorites?  No problem, do a 1 or 2 ounce portion of your favorite two or three menu items.  Want to try desserts made by each of your favorite three aunts?  No problem, take a small slice a pie and cake and split a cookie with your spouse – then go for a walk and smell what the neighbors are cooking for dinner.

In the morning while the turkey’s cooking, play tag-football with the kids, take the dog out for a walk…. The more activity you do, the more calories you burn.  And the more calories you burn the more food you’ve earned to eat!!!

One more quick suggestion about finding time for physical activity – MAKE IT FUN!  The more fun you make it, the more likely you are to do it.  Treadmill time boring?  Watch TV or train yourself to read and walk (obviously it’s a slow pace), you’ll find yourself doing MORE time then planned because you want to watch the end of the show or finish a chapter.  Take up kayaking with a friend (Scott and I took our first kayak trip last week and had a blast, and I discovered that’s it’s a workout for your core, too). Change things up a little bit, if you generally walk through your neighborhood then bike through it…. You’ll find that you’ll meet some new people – because the bikers have a tendency to wave and greet each other, just like the walkers do.

Be good to yourself, because only YOU can do it…. Do it for you, do it for the kids or the husband, but do it!

Calorie Burn during Cardio Kickboxing

Q – I participate in a high level kickboxing cardio program.  The kickboxing center claims they have done research and you can burn up to 800 calories in a workout.  My bodybugg shows about 300 calories per workout.  Can you actually burn 800 calories in a workout??

As a Fit Pro, I get asked questions like this all the time.  Most of the time you’ll find that the research done when these studios report numbers is done by men, men with large muscles… Men burn more then women do, and the more muscle you have the more calories you burn….. therefore, the numbers that they are going to report are going to be higher then what the average jane or joe will experience!
