This is something I’m particularly interested in myself. After my surgery earlier this month, increasing my intake of calcium is important to help prevent bone loss.

A blog on MayoClinic.com regarding portion control:

Remember, it’s not the QUANTITY of food that you crave but the QUALITY. Slow down and enjoy the meal, rushing through it generally leads to eating more then you need…. You need time for your brain and tummy to talk and give you the “I’m full” message!

Well, it’s mid-December and time to start feeling a little guilty about all we’ve eaten the past month or so (include Halloween and we’re talking 6 weeks of indulgence). And we’re not done yet, so I’ll bet there are still a few holiday parties left before your New Year’s Eve bash. A few things to remember during the last two weeks of the year:
Salads are not always your friend – your basic salad with veggies is fine, it’s when you start adding toppings that the calories start to add up (croutons, bacon, cheese, dressing, nuts). Try dried fruits instead of those other condiments, it will help to sweeten up the salad and add a great taste that you’ll enjoy (a quarter cup of many of those packaged dried fruits is generally around 140 calories).
Watch those side dishes – yes, the green beans and yams are healthy and low calorie. But, again, it’s what you add to them that makes them a high calorie side dish (butter, olive oil, marshmallows). If your side dish contains these items, then choose a smaller portion.
Alcohol – I find that I prefer to drink beer because it’s easier for me to know exactly how many calories I consume. When someone pours you a mixed drink, you never really know how much alcohol is in the glass to know how many calories to account for. If you are keeping track, completely finish your drink before you allow someone to pour more into your glass (I always hate it when the waiter thinks he’s being efficient and adds wine to my partially-filled glass).
Desserts – You know you’re going to partake, so you may as well plan for it when you put your main dish on your plate. Cut down on what you would serve yourself for dinner to save some room in your calorie bank for dessert calories. When it comes time for dessert you’ll find that you want to try more then one of the dishes being served – so do, but try a half of cookie and a half of piece of pie. I assure you there will be someone else in the room that will be relieved to see you do this and take the other half of what you leave behind!
Remember that it is the QUALITY of food that you crave, it is not the QUANTITY.
Enjoy the rest of your holiday gatherings. Then when you’re ready, visit us at: www.MoveMoreEatLess.org so we can show you how to shed those calories and feel better about yourself!!

There’s a great recipe that I found on the MayoClinic.com’s newsletter:
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/healthy-recipes/NU00432
This turkey recipe serves 10 and is low in sodium, about 5 ounces of light and dark meat is 247 calories. Keep those main dish calories low, then you’ve got room in your calorie ‘bank’ for desserts and some of your other favorite high calorie goodies!!

Good morning, everyone!
I meant to log in and publish this this weekend, but just neglected to do so. Tomorrow will mark two weeks since my surgery to remove the pelvic mass and I’m beginning to finally feel a little more normal. About mid-week next week I finally found a comfortable sleeping position – only one comfortable position and I still woke up in time for my pain pill every night.
My follow up appointment last week went well and my scar seems to be healing properly. Of course the doctor did keep me under house arrest for another 4 to 6 weeks (I’m hoping that 4 weeks is all that’s necessary for mending, I’m already anxious), with no driving or lifting.
I am thankful that even Key West has quality doctors and we found it and took care of it before it because a physical problem for me. I am also thankful that I came in to this in good health, which made my recovery all that much faster. (Even the nurses in the holding area before surgery commented about how I appeared to be in good physical condition and how that would help my post-surgery healing process)
Two lessons for everyone here – don’t skip your doctor’s visits and that staying physically active and watching your diet are important not only to leading a healthy lifestyle, but to post-surgery recovery as well.
Get off your duff and go get some exercise!

It’s time to start thinking about your New Year’s Resolutions…. Me? I’ve got a little medical thing that I’m hoping will be less stressful by that time (once things are a little more settled I’ll log in and fill you in – because I’m a big believer in sharing your experiences so that others can learn from them). I’m also hoping that we get the house that we put a Contract on before Thanksgiving (it’s a short sale, so who knows when the bank will approve it). And I’m hoping to get my teller job to a full time gig, to help pay some bills and work on a little extra income for our (possible) upcoming new home.

Okay, I LOVE it when I find one out that my Mom was wrong on one of those things that she always nagged about…. I mean, seriously, they call it ‘wives tales’ for a reason. Another great Question & Answer from the MyApex Daily Q & A archive:
Q – I’ve heard that you shouldn’t swim (or exercise) for 45 minutes after eating. Is that true??

Happy December – the start of winter and the holiday season!!
I wanted to drop a reminder to all women (and fathers, husbands, friends of women) to NOT forget to schedule your annual GYN appointment. Even though it can be a little uncomfortable and embarrassing, it’s an important part of taking care of yourself. At my annual this year, I had a little scare and regret that I held off on my appointment for the few months that I did (I believe my last appointment was 16 months prior, instead of the recommended 12). My new GYN found a teratoma (a multiple celled cyst). He did an in-office ultra-sound and said that it appeared to be about the size of a four month old fetus, and unsure what exactly it had attached itself to (but was blocking his view of the uterus). After a CT scan and an ultra-sound, it was decided that it was bigger then something he would tackle in his office and he sent me to Miami, a specialist in the Sylvester Cancer Center at the U of M medical campus.
Dr. Twiggs was wonderful and his assistant, Lilly, helped to get me in as soon as possible (she called me during her Thanksgiving vacation to help schedule both the in-office visit and surgery). Surgery was last Tuesday, and I still haven’t heard all of the details of the flurry of activities yet – in short, it sounds like they put me under and then conducted a complete pelvic exam to determine the size and precise location of the teratoma. In doing so, they realized that it was not only larger then they expected, but shaped like a question mark around my other organs in the area. Dr Twiggs had warned me during my in-office visit that they may find it necessary to do something more then a traditional C-section, and they did. The incision is from my naval down, and they still had some trouble getting the teratoma out in one piece (but were successful). They did a complete hysterectomy (which we discussed as a possibility) and removed my appendix, as well. The first two of the three biopsies of the cell have come back benign and I have no reason to believe that the third will come back with the same result next week.
Lesson learned – so lesson being shared…. Do not skip your appointments. I don’t even want to have a conversation with the doctor about what could have happened had this thing grown and gotten bigger before we caught it. Buck it up and get over the embarrassement and schedule the appointment. The only reason why I waited is because I found myself in a new area and I really didn’t want to have to go through the hassle of finding another doctor again this year ….. Silly Sharron.
We take care of our kids, our spouses, our houses and our jobs…. Why don’t we take the time to take care of ourselves??? If we don’t, who will?

This question from the MyApex Daily Q & A Archive is quite interesting – this reader introduces the thought that when their bodybugg™ program suggests that their food groups should be eaten separately (carbs at one meal and proteins at another).
Q – I am supposed to eat 20% fat, 20% protein, and 60^ carbs. When should I eat my carb vs. protein?

I have indoor allergies in general, I’ve never been diagnosed with Dust Mist Allergies specifically. Although, when we moved to Florida where our entire home is tiled I found my allergies died down greatly. I honestly think that it’s because of the dust mites that the carpets hold. Between that and the cat dander, I feel much better every morning with our tiled floors! I highly recommend getting read of carpets!!
