"Fat Free" Cooking Sprays? How can that be???

Thank you, Yahoo, for putting this out there.  This is a big part of our Nutrition Seminar. . . If you read the ingredients in the Fat Free Cooking Sprays, you will plainly see that the ingredients themselves are not calorie-free and fat free, so how can they list Fat Free or Calorie Free on the label???

http://health.yahoo.com/experts/joybauernutrition/24072/are-fat-free-sprays-really-fat-free/

It’s all in the portion sizing and the labeling. . . . It’s not magic.

my weekly weigh-in

Good morning, friends!
A quick personal update – my weigh-in this week was 153.5.  I’ve lost 5 pounds since I started tracking my numbers seriously again.  Yah me!

I am a little over where I should be, based on my Goal Chart I should have lost about 3 pounds and I lost 5.  I’m sure that much of that is water weight, as I started getting better about drinking my water again. I fell off the wagon both with watching my calories AND with drinking water, I’m much better at both now.

Congratulations to all of us that are happy with where we wanted to be the last weekend in January.  Yah us!

Physical Activity Recommendations

This was taken from the Weight Control Information Network:

Experts recommend at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity on most, if not all, days of the week. This amount of physical activity may reduce your risk for some chronic diseases.

To lose weight, experts recommend that you do 60 minutes of moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity on most days of the week. In addition, you should follow a nutritious eating plan and consume fewer calories than you burn each day. Remember that your weight may be affected by the balance of “calories-in” and “calories-out.”

In order to maintain your weight after weight loss, experts recommend that you do 60 to 90 minutes of daily moderate-intensity physical activity while continuing to eat nutritious foods that do not exceed your calorie requirements. Studies show that physical activity is very important to successful long-term weight control.”

Finding yourself in front of the TV again??

Now that your favorite show is back on and ‘all new’ are you back in front of the TV again??  It’s kind of a Catch-22, the holiday eating is finally over but now you’re sitting on your rear end in front of the TV!

STAND UP to watch your favorite program – you burn more calories standing than sitting.  Walk in place and increase that calorie burn even more.  Leave the room during commercials.  You don’t need a reason, just walk out of the room so you don’t get bored!

BMI Calculator

Okay, so you hear the talk about the Body Mass Index – blah blah blah… right??  Well, here’s a link so you can figure out what your BMI is.

http://www.consumer.gov/weightloss/bmi.htm

There’s a calculator at the bottom of the page, but there’s also a chart so that you can see the numbers first hand.  This is another great website of information – Consumer.gov… aren’t those the people in Pueblo, CO, that I remember seeing commercials about ordering free brochures when I was a kid?  (yes, I’m talking 30 years ago) I’m betting it is….

my personal weight management update

Happy Day One of the Playoffs!!

Unless you don’t care about football, then – Happy Saturday!!

I’ve had a great week.  My weigh-in was on Wednesday and I’ve been able to maintain just at my 500 calorie a day deficit (reminder – deficit means that I need to burn 500 calories MORE a day then I eat).  I woke up this morning with a stuffy nose and sore throat, so (in the name of trying to prevent a cold from creeping in) I’ve been a little less active today then usual.  I’ve increased my Vitamin C intake, took Zycam, made sure to take my regular vitamins, and took a nap in the middle of the day.  This decrease in activity means that I’m burning less calories then I normally do.  I’ve been good about my eating to balance the lack of calorie burn:
Breakfast – Quaker Instant Maple and Brown Sugar Oatmeal (with water) 160 calories

Lunch – Campbells Select Chicken and Rice Soup 100 calories, and 30 Wheat Thins 300 calories

During the holidays, I noticed that I was drinking less water – so I’ve increased my water intake, too.  Yes, the more you drink the more you visit the potty.  But it your body really needs and thrives off of an increase in water; it’s good for your organs, including making your skin brighter and clearer.  You will eventually stop making so many trips to the potty, too, once you start drinking water and get into the habit your body stops retaining so much water….thereby, less trips to the potty!

I’m feeling really good about losing that pound this week and being successful on Week One!  Will keep you updated.  Have a great weekend!!

Making Healthy Foods Taste Good

I'm back on track, and jumping on the bandwagon with everyone else!

Good evening!
Well, now we all now – it happens to absolutely all of us.  Even though I have this fabulous tool in my hands and wear it every single day, I’ve not been good about updating my Food Log so that I can balance BOTH ends of the calorie numbers (both numbers = Calories Burned and Calories Consumed).

So, instead of going through all of the excuse – I’m ready to get back on the bandwagon and track my incoming calories…. Starting today.  Here’s my day (don’t worry, I don’t plan on doing this every day – but what better way to commit yourself???)

Weigh in 158.5

Breakfast was 2 pop tarts (400 calories)
Lunch was 2 hot dogs (each with a 110 calorie bun and a 70 calorie turkey dog, and one slice of dill pickle, and a total of .25 cup of cheddar cheese)

Total calories consumed so far = 814

I have had a fairly typical day, drove to Waldorf and back (sat in a two hour meeting), light grocery store trip, then to the gym where it was MOBBED so I only did 30 minutes of cardio and about 20 minutes of weight training (all arms).  Total calories burned through about 5:50pm = 1831

That’s a deficit of 1017 calories (deficit means that I BURNED more calories then I ate, which is the entire point of the program if you want to lose weight).  My Goal?  To lose 8.5 pounds, I’m going to start a little aggressive and lose a pound a week.  After about 4 or 5 pounds, I’ll probably cut myself back and be a little less aggressive (allowing myself either more food or less exercise every day).  Once I lose the first 5 pounds or so, probably no one but me will notice the rest of the weight….. so why push myself so hard?

In case you were wondering, dinner’s going to be pasta with Ragu (Traditional Ragu – I use it very lightly, just coloring the pasta – then add cheese, of course).  I don’t always use light or fat free products, because I like the taste of the ‘real’ stuff, so I either eat less of the ‘real’ stuff or add in a little extra physical activity to make up for the calories (although sometimes there’s not a huge calorie difference between ‘light’ and ‘regular’ – watch those labels).

Have a great evening.  Good luck to everyone that’s taken on the Weight New Year’s Resolution!!!

Dine Out Wisely

WebMD.com helps you Dine Out Wisely:

This article is great, she actually goes in to a few of our favorite chain restaurants:

 http://www.webmd.com/diet/features/order-smart-at-food-chains

Is your favorite not listed?  Go out to their website before you eat there next time, and you can be better prepared.  Even some of the smaller non-chain restaurants can help you eat healthier – to help control their costs, they have the kitchen staff weigh the pasta or meat before they cook it.  This allows you the ability to track what you’re eating (when you’re counting your own calories at the restaurant, be sure to ALWAYS add a couple of tablespoons of butter or olive oil, even if you don’t taste it – they generally use one of these to add flavor).

You can always contact me to learn more about weight control, that’s what I do….

Have a great 2008!
