Eating Right This Winter

USA.Gov’s Number 6 New Year’s Resolution – Eat Right.  The link helps you make better food choices during the holidays and throughout the year.  Remember, a pound or two doesn’t seem like much but adds up throughout the years… If you gain two pounds every year between October and the New Year, that’s 20 pounds in 10 years AND doesn’t include any weight gain during the remainder of the year.

Another great link from the USA.gov site:

Stay Informed!

I’m getting ready to head to Florida to help my Dad get settled in for the winter (his regular winter trip was postponed because he had two strokes in July).  In the meantime, I don’t want you to feel like you’re missing anything.

SO, hit this link http://my.apexfitness.com/vip/content/q_a_list.php - This is Apex’s Daily Q & A page. Full of useful information and tips and great ideas.  It’s updated everyday, because they have a huge staff that can do that kind of thing for them…. SO, until I can come back why don’t you take advantage of them every day and go check it out?

I’ll be back online on the 21st.  Dad will be settled in, or at least know WHEN we can get him in to his house, and I’ll be back and ready to take on the challenge of keeping my Blog updated 5 days a week.

Keep on track.  December begins a tough time on our bodies – between the cold and our natural ‘want’ to eat to stay warm, and the holiday cookies and goodies…. Don’t give in to temptation.  Try ONE cookie.  I’ve said it before, and will say it again, it’s NOT the quantity that you crave.

Instead, it’s the Quality.  Eat better, eat less.  There will be leftovers tomorrow!

my personal bodybugg update

Okay, I’m an idiot – I keep forgetting to get on the scale.  I know that sounds lame, but I don’t keep it in my bathroom (simply because it’s hard to resist stepping on the scale a few times a day when it’s in the bathroom).  So, by the time I remember to step on the scale I’m already clothed for the day…. And no one wants to see what their weight is when they’re wearing blue jeans and sneakers!

Last time I stepped on with jeans, my weight was the same – SO, I’m assuming that I lost a pound last week.  Going to try to remember to step on it it this week, because I’m heading to Florida with my father for a few days….

Nonetheless, I’m reviewing my incoming and outgoing calorie numbers and it looks like I’m on track.  I will admit that I’ve had TWO tailgating days since my last weigh-in, and those are NEVER balanced properly.  Fortunately, only one more tailgating event and one more major Holiday Party. . . . .

Speaking of Holiday Parties - Don’t forget, it’s not the QUANTITY that you are craving, but the quality.  Try a little bit of everything, don’t load your plates up with huge amounts of your favorites.  They’ll always be leftovers, and you can have more tomorrow!!

update on my own bodybugg progress

Okay, I’m no different then the rest of the world – I have dramas and issues that prevent me from being the weight that I want to be.  And, I’ll admit that I’m blaming it on a list of things that I could have a little better control over if I tried just a little harder…. Like my Dad’s two strokes in July and my spending so much time in the car to go back and forth in between my house and his…. And I haven’t been tracking my food very well because I bought a stupid Motorola Q and it didn’t have a Notepad (and I guess I was just too lazy to try to do it on paper).  I’ve been wearing my Armband faithfully, so I’ve always known my calorie burn and just kind of been blindly working from there – and have been reminded that it IS so much easier if you have both sets of numbers, not easy to do with just one.

SO, I’m putting it out on the web that I’m going to be better about tracking my incoming calories.  Started yesterday with my new Treo.  I want to tell you that my weight is 156, but I had the stomach bug this weekend.  So, I don’t know how good that number is.  While I LOVED being 139, I hated people telling me that I was too skinny, so I think my goal is 145.  I am not the least bit concerned about hitting this number.  All I have to do is keep track of the numbers.

I’ll keep you posted.  Once I feel like I’m back ‘on track’ after the stomach bug, I’ll update my weight and fill you in on my weight loss goals . . Giving you an opportunity to watch, and giving me an opportunity to have a little bit of a commitment.  After all, it is on the WWW!

ps – Don’t bother with the Motorola Q, seriously my husband and I both hated it.  We both got one in May, spent the past 6 months cursing it.  Just replaced it last week with a Treo, and I am already SO much happier.  (This is my 3rd generation Treo)  It’s nice to have a real calculator, tasks, notepad. . . the list goes on and on.

Have a great day.  Hope that you’ve been enjoying my posts!

Myth 5 . . .

Myth 5 of the 5 Myths Responsible for Many Fitness Failures:

5. Strength training will make you bulk up.

Another NO! It seems as if mostly women are concerned with this one. Muscle size is primarily affected by genetics and hormone production; therefore, most women don’t have the potential to build very large muscles.

Muscle burns calories, so the more muscle you have, the more calories you burn which makes easier to burn fat and harder to gain it!

Myth 4 . . .

Myth 4 of the 5 Myths Responsible for Many Fitness Failures:

4. Eating after 7pm will make you fat.

Absolutely false! It all depends on whether or not the body needs that amount of calories at that time. Keep in mind your body is constantly burning calories, 24 hours per day, just the amount varies.

Myth 3. . .

Myth 3 of the 5 Myths Responsible for Many Fitness Failures:

3. Pasta and bread are fattening.

Anything is fattening! Lettuce can be stored as fat! Any food or drink, which contains calories, can be stored as body fat if it causes your blood sugar levels to exceed what the body needs at that time. Bread and pasta are actually great sources of complex carbohydrate! The key is how much you eat and when you eat it.

Myth 2 .....

Myth 2 of the 5 Myths Responsible for Many Fitness Failures:

2. Your metabolism slows down once you hit 30.

WRONG! Actually, hundreds of research studies have shown that the slow down in metabolism is due to a loss of muscle tissue. And the loss of muscle tissue is directly related to a lack of hard physical activity!

5 Myths Responsible for Many Fitness Failures

Unfortunately, many people are misinformed and are also misled by the many promises of the weight loss industry. Everywhere you look, you see or hear of people promising “Dramatic Weight Loss” with products such as “The Fat Trapper”, or “Exercise in a Bottle”.

Then you also have the hundreds of diets out there such as “The Zone”, “Sugar Busters” or “The Atkins Diet”. I’m sure you have heard of many of these yourself. You might have even tried some of them. Unfortunately, these products and diets are not the quick fix, or the miracles they are portrayed as. They are also usually very dangerous.

Beginning tomorrow, I’ll list the 5 Myths Responsible for Many Fitness Failures. . . stay tuned!

Bone Health

"It's Never Too Early -- Or Late -- To Think About Good Bone Health," stresses the importance of taking care of one's skeletal system throughout one's life-span.

Experts interviewed for the article reiterated certain well-known facts that always bear repeating:

  • Osteoporosis involves a loss of bone density, leading to brittle, easily-fractured bones as well as to curvature of the spine;
  • Although osteoporosis can strike men, it is seen far more often in women;
  • Persons of any age can develop osteoporosis; however, its prevalence sharply increases in the over-fifty population segment.
  • Less widely-understood is the fact that establishing good diet and exercise habits during one's early years can help to postpone the onset of osteoporosis in later years.

The report's recommendations include ensuring that children receive sufficient calcium, vitamin D, and physical exercise. Teenagers must be discouraged from taking up cigarette smoking. Young adults should remain focused on proper diet and exercise. They need to know that extreme thinness can be seriously harmful to their bone health.

In older adults, a balanced diet including the necessary vitamins and minerals is advised in order to help slow the rate of bone loss. As people enter their sixties and seventies, exercise becomes invaluable as a means of preserving adequate bone mass.

Doctors Prescribing Exercise to Fight Fat

Yahoo Health News – February 7, 2005

http://health.yahoo.com/news/_58121

Take two hikes and call me in the morning. It may sound like an unusual prescription, but it's an increasingly common one at a hospital where physical fitness is part of doctor's orders for patients battling obesity.  The effort is the result of an unusual partnership between physicians and hiking enthusiasts. Just a few months old and already earning praise, the program involves several dozen doctors writing detailed, albeit symbolic, prescriptions for getting fit and then giving patients trail maps to accomplish it.

"The idea is to make a more specific explanation," said Dr. Charles Brackett, director of the program at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. "You can say, 'Walk this trail near your house twice a day,' as opposed to, 'You're supposed to exercise more.'" That personalization is key. In weight-obsessed America — where two-thirds of adults are overweight or obese — follow-through on fitness and nutrition can be as much a problem as ignorance.

Studies show that the more concrete a doctor's advice, the more likely a patient is to heed it. While Dartmouth-Hitchcock's prescriptions aren't technically real, the hope is that the format makes the advice hard to ignore. It made the difference for Gloria Beattie, a 72-year-old woman for whom Brackett prescribed fitness in December. Winter weather so far has kept her off the hiking trails, but the prescription motivated her to get on her treadmill.  Before that, the overweight woman got little exercise, adding to her existing health problems. She already has lost 12 pounds and is eager for spring so she can head outdoors.  "It had a big effect," she said of the prescription. "If no one says anything, you just keep letting it go. But if they talk to you and explain why you need it ... you finally come to the realization that exercise is really the thing that you need."

Using the power of the prescription pad to encourage physical fitness isn't new, but in general medicine it is rare.  Though so-called exercise prescriptions are widely used by doctors at obesity clinics, the practice hasn't caught on with general practitioners.  In fact, few primary care doctors talk about fitness and weight loss at all with patients, even obese ones, said Dr. JoAnn Manson, chief of preventive medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.  That's because the medical community has been slow to address lifestyle as a means of disease prevention, said Manson, co-author of a report urging doctors to counsel patients on exercise and weight control.  "A prescription for exercise may be the most important prescription a physician writes all day," she said.  "If a prescription for medication could reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, Type 2 diabetes and osteoporosis by 40 percent, everyone would be clamoring for it. Well, a prescription for brisk walking has the potential to do just that."

Yet more than half of American adults aren't active enough, and a quarter do no physical activity at all, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  Few doctors have embraced this approach for the same reason so many of their patients aren't out doing laps: lack of time.  The pressures of a busy practice leave many doctors little time to chat about fitness. But Manson says it's either find a way now, or spend much more time with the patient later dealing with the health consequences of obesity. . . . . . . . .
