Halloween means candy - not just for the kids, but you too . . . . .

Okay, Halloween is upon us – for those people with kids, that means they will be bringing candy in to the house.  For just about everyone, that means we will be bringing candy in to the house to give away to those kids……

Suggestion Number 1 (supported by dentists everywhere, I would think) – Don’t give away candy.  Instead, give away stickers and cute toys.  I realize its too late for this year, but I get a lot of cute stuff at Oriental Trading for not a lot of money – and get age-appropriate stuff (like stickers for the young kids and eyeball balls for the older ones).  If you buy toys, instead of candy, and have left-overs you just pop them in to the attic with your Halloween decorations and save them for next year! (instead of feeling like you have to EAT the left-overs!)

Suggestion Number 2 – Buy candy that you don’t care for…. Be careful with this one, though, because you at least want the kids to like it.  Otherwise you’ll find out what the latest ‘Tricks’ are!

Suggestion Number 3 – Keep track of how many bags of candy you go through and make a note for next year.  That will help you from over shopping next year!

Suggestion Number 4 – Kids bringing candy in to the house???  If you’re going to let them consume more sugar and calories, help them to increase their activity level so THEY aren’t gaining weight because of the holiday.  Then, you’ll want to take this advice yourself, because quite often we consume some of what they bring in to the home.

Suggestion Number 5 – You’ve got plenty of time to consume that candy.  Freeze it for later.  There’s no reason that it all has to be eaten this week.

Stay Strong!

stay single, stay thin????

Personally, I LOVE being married – so I’m not posting this to support being single.  Instead, I’m posting this as a Warning for those of us that get comfortable after we’ve chosen our ‘special person’ and then let our weight go….

Thanks, again, to Yahoo:

raking IS exercise

It’s fall and time to get out there and address those leaves covering up that lawn you spent so many hours on this summer.  A quick reminder that raking IS exercise, and you’ll find yourself using muscles that you haven’t used in a while.

Thank you to Yahoo News (who got this from HealthDay):

Calorie Burn from Saturday's ride

I forgot to update my calorie burn from Saturday’s ride – I burned 3510 calories on Saturday.  It was a FABULOUS day for a 100 mile ride.  It started out foggy, so very foggy it almost felt like a mist was coming down on you.  As the sun came up and the fog burned off, the last two hours of the ride got pretty darned hot.

Got to see a few old friends – it’s hard to believe that you are with a good 4-5000 people riding bikes and you run in to people you actually know.  Some of our old gym members were there, the guy that used to fix our bikes in Fairfax, and a few other folks that I hadn’t seen in a while.  Of course, there were ponies on Assoteguea, too, that’s always fun!  Mile marker 82 is the pie and ice cream stop, that’s always something to look forward to…. That sugar high gets you the energy that you need to get through the last 18 miles.

Yah for biking… Yah for finishing my second 100 mile ride in one year.

A whole family that's on my bodybugg(tm) program!!

I have a client that’s been wearing the Armband and using the bodybugg™ calorie management system for about a year now – he was doing so well that about 6 months after he went ‘live’, his 21 year old son purchased one.  Then, just today I got a call from his wife – completely jealous that he’s nearly at his ideal weight, and their son has passed his ideal weight and is quite the ‘hottie’ with the ladies….

So, now she’s ready to get in to the program as well.  I’m so excited to be able to say that we’ve got a whole family of bodybuggers!  Long live the bodybuggers!

Today is Seagull Century Day!

Today Scott and I are participating in our fourth Seagull Century Ride – it takes place on the Eastern Shore of Maryland (Salisbury is the starting point).  It’s beautiful country, and a mostly flat ride.  It’s a long ride but quite a feeling of accomplishment when you sit down for your dinner and dessert tonight!!!

Here are some photos of last year’s ride – as I recall about 7500 people sign up each year.  It’s you and 7499 of your closest friends and a whole bunch of sleepy college students at 6:30 in the morning!

http://www.seagullcentury.org/album/images/default.asp

(by the way, it has rained the past two years – miserable and icky – they’ve guaranteed no rain this year…. We’ll see)

Defining Overweight and Obesity

The CDC is a fabulous resource, thanks again to them for putting this on their website!

Overweight and obesity are both labels for ranges of weight that are greater than what is generally considered healthy for a given height. The terms also identify ranges of weight that have been shown to increase the likelihood of certain diseases and other health problems.

Factors contributing to a complex health issue (obesity)

Increases in obesity — among both adults and children — have prompted concern about the implications for Americans’ health. Many factors contribute to this complex health issue.

Reduce the risk for many diseases with physical activity

Still more from our friends at the CDC….

Regular physical activity reduces the risk for many diseases, helps control weight, and strengthens muscles, bones, and joints. For older adults, it can also reduce the risk for falls.
